Smartwatches age through battery capacity and software support. A used Apple Watch Series 8 can be smart; a Series 3 may be obsolete for new watchOS features.

Apple Watch checklist

• Series and size — confirm case size (40/44/45 mm) and GPS vs GPS+Cellular.
• Battery health — ask seller; Apple shows health in Settings on the watch.
• Activation lock — device must be removed from seller's Apple ID before you pair.
• Bands — sport bands wear; luxury bands may not be included.

Garmin / fitness brands

• Confirm sync with your phone OS.
• Check water resistance seals if you swim.
