eBay condition grades explained for used electronics

Every eBay condition label for electronics, what each one commits the seller to, which ones carry an Allstate warranty, and the photo checks to run before you buy.

Condition labels are claims, not certifications

eBay's condition field is chosen by the seller from a fixed list. Nobody at eBay inspects the item to confirm the choice, and no lab grades it. What the field does is create a commitment: pick Excellent - Refurbished and you have made a specific, enforceable claim about that device, which the Money Back Guarantee can be used against if the item arrives materially different.

So the label is worth reading closely — not because it guarantees quality, but because it defines what "not as described" means for your purchase.

Every eBay condition, defined

Condition What it means Warranty
New Unused, unopened, undamaged, sealed Manufacturer's, if any
New other Unused, no wear, packaging opened or absent None
Open box Unused, original packaging opened None
Certified - Refurbished Manufacturer or approved vendor refurb 2 years, Allstate
Excellent - Refurbished Like-new after professional refurb 1 year, Allstate
Very Good - Refurbished Minimal wear after professional refurb 1 year, Allstate
Good - Refurbished Moderate wear after professional refurb 1 year, Allstate
Used / Pre-owned Previously owned, works as intended None
For parts or not working Does not function as intended None

Availability varies by category — not every condition appears in every electronics category, and the refurbished tiers only appear where eBay's Refurbished program operates.

The four refurbished tiers in detail

This is where the real money and the real protection sit, and where most buyers stop reading too early.

Certified - Refurbished is the top tier and the narrowest. The refurbishment must be performed by the manufacturer or a manufacturer-approved vendor, to manufacturer specifications, and the item ships in new packaging with original or new accessories. It carries a two-year warranty serviced by Allstate, who handle claims directly rather than routing them through the seller. Nothing else on eBay — and nothing at Back Market, Amazon Renewed, Reebelo or Decluttr — matches two years.

Excellent, Very Good and Good - Refurbished are performed by qualified third-party sellers accepted into eBay's Refurbished program, and all three carry a one-year Allstate warranty. The items ship in new generic packaging with original or new accessories. The only difference between the three tiers is cosmetic: like-new for Excellent, minimal wear for Very Good, moderate wear for Good. All three are fully functional and professionally inspected and cleaned.

Sellers do not simply choose these labels. The program requires an application, at least 98% positive feedback, free shipping, and a return window of at least 30 days.

Tier Refurbished by Cosmetics Packaging Warranty
Certified Maker or approved vendor Pristine New retail 2 years
Excellent Qualified seller Like new New generic 1 year
Very Good Qualified seller Minimal wear New generic 1 year
Good Qualified seller Moderate wear New generic 1 year

The unused tiers, and the trap in them

New, New other and Open box all describe items nobody has used. They are also the tiers where buyers most often assume protection that is not there.

An Open box laptop has no warranty from eBay and frequently no manufacturer warranty either, because manufacturer coverage often starts at first retail sale and may not transfer. New other can mean a factory second, an item with damaged packaging, or a unit missing its original wrapping. Neither label carries an Allstate warranty, because neither is part of the Refurbished program.

If you want unused condition with coverage, Certified - Refurbished is usually the better instrument than Open box: pristine condition, new packaging, and two years of warranty behind it.

Used, and what the word is doing

Used — shown as Pre-owned in many categories — means the item was previously owned, may show cosmetic wear, and is fully operational and functions as intended. That last clause is the useful one. A Used listing is a promise that the device works. If it arrives dead, that is a not-as-described case regardless of whether the seller accepts returns.

What Used does not tell you is degree. A two-month-old phone and a five-year-old phone with a swollen battery can both be listed as Used, which is why the seller's photos and description carry more weight in this tier than in any other.

For parts or not working

The item does not function as intended: defective in ways that make it difficult to use, in need of service or repair, or missing essential components. Sellers use it correctly most of the time, because listing a broken item under any other condition invites a case they will lose.

Buy it only to repair or to harvest a component, and read the description for what specifically fails. The Money Back Guarantee still applies to items that never arrive or differ materially from the description, but "it doesn't work" is not a valid complaint against a listing that said so.

The photo checklist

Photos are the only inspection you get. Run this before you buy anything above trivial value.

  1. Powered onScreen lit, showing a home screen or a settings page, not a black slab or a stock image.

  2. All six sidesFront, back, both edges, top and bottom. Missing angles are usually hiding something.

  3. Serial or IMEI visibleLets you confirm the model and, on phones, check the device is not reported lost or stolen.

  4. Ports and hinges close upBent pins, corrosion around a charging port, and hinge wear are the expensive faults that photograph badly on purpose.

  5. The settings screenBattery health on a phone, cycle count on a laptop, storage capacity. A screenshot costs the seller nothing and tells you the most.

  6. What is in the boxCharger, cable, stylus, ear tips. Accessories that appear in a stock photo but not in the seller's photo are usually not included.

Category-specific reading

Category The grade hides Ask for
Phones Battery health, carrier lock Health %, lock status
Laptops Cycle count, prior repairs Cycle count, screen photo
Earbuds Battery runtime, tip hygiene Runtime, new tips
Cameras Shutter count, fungus Count, rear element photo
Consoles Drift, disc drive wear Controller test, drive test
Smartwatches Battery, band condition Health %, band photo

Deeper category advice is in the buying guides: earbuds, laptops and tablets.

Pair the grade with the seller

A pristine grade from a low-feedback seller is riskier than Good - Refurbished from a specialist with tens of thousands of ratings, because the grade is a claim and the feedback history is the evidence that the claims tend to be true. Our thresholds for reading that history are in how to find trusted eBay sellers, and how eBay's warranties compare with Back Market, Amazon Renewed and the rest is in best places to buy used electronics.

Open Trusted Finder, combine your condition keywords with a minimum seller feedback level, and you will spend your time reading listings that are worth reading.
