If you only read one table, read this one. Each row is a buying situation, not a marketplace.

How the five dimensions score

Scores are ours, on a 1–5 scale, and reflect published policy and marketplace structure rather than any single transaction. The reasoning behind each column is in the sections below.

eBay scores 3 on trust because the platform is a distribution of sellers rather than a single standard — the good ones are excellent, and the bad ones are still listed. Swappa scores 2 on warranty because coverage is the exception rather than the default. Amazon Renewed scores 5 on ease because the refund path is the same flow you already use for everything else on Amazon.

Returns, warranties, and who pays the shipping

This is the table most comparison pages get wrong, because they conflate the return window with the warranty. They are separate clocks.

Two details are worth internalizing. First, eBay's Money Back Guarantee runs 30 days from the delivery date, not the purchase date, and it applies whether or not the seller offers returns — an item that never arrives, or that arrives materially different from the listing, is refundable regardless of the seller's stated policy. Second, Amazon's 90 days is a return-or-replace window rather than a warranty in the usual sense; Renewed Premium splits into a 30-day return plus an 11-month Asurion limited warranty with no deductible.

Dimension 1: Authentic products and trusted sellers

These six marketplaces solve the trust problem in three different ways, and it is worth knowing which one you are relying on.

Vetting the seller is eBay's approach, and only inside its Refurbished program, which requires at least 98% positive feedback plus free shipping and a minimum 30-day return window. Vetting the listing is Swappa's approach. Nearly all listings are manually reviewed by Swappa's moderation team before they go live, against a published device standard.

That is a genuinely higher floor than eBay's open marketplace, and it is why a Swappa listing rarely surprises you on arrival.

Vetting the device is what Back Market, Amazon Renewed and Gazelle do: a refurbisher tests the hardware against a checklist before it ships. On Back Market and Amazon the refurbisher is a third party in a network, so quality varies between sellers within the same platform. On Gazelle, one company does the work, which trades variety for consistency.

None of the six authenticates electronics against counterfeits. eBay's Authenticity Guarantee — the badge people remember — covers sneakers, handbags, watches, jewelry, streetwear, trading cards and coins. It does not cover a laptop, a phone, a camera or a console.

Dimension 2: Warranties and return policies

Back Market's warranty is the easiest to reason about: 12 months from delivery on every device, provided by the seller rather than by Back Market, covering hardware and software defects but excluding accidental damage, drops, cracked screens and liquid damage. Those exclusions are what the separate Protection Plan is sold for. Reebelo's 12-month vendor warranty works the same way.

eBay's is the strongest but the most conditional. Certified Refurbished carries a two-year Allstate warranty, with Allstate servicing claims directly rather than the seller. The Excellent, Very Good and Good Refurbished tiers carry one year, also through Allstate. Buy a listing in plain Used or Open box condition and there is no warranty at all — only the Money Back Guarantee, for the first 30 days.

Swappa is the outlier. The default is no warranty; the device is sold as it stands by an individual. Swappa does run a One-Year Limited Warranty, but it is provided by the seller, not by Swappa, and it applies only to listings explicitly marked as carrying it — typically vetted business sellers with testing equipment. If the listing does not say those words, assume no coverage. Returns go back to the seller rather than to Swappa: mandatory when the item is not as advertised or fails Swappa's criteria, with the seller paying return shipping, and discretionary for change of mind, with the buyer paying and the seller free to decline.

Dimension 3: Ease of use and marketplace experience

Amazon Renewed is the smoothest, for the obvious reason: it is Amazon. Prime delivery where applicable, the returns flow you already know, and a 90-day window that removes most of the anxiety from the purchase. The cost is that Renewed cosmetic grading is the loosest of the six, so a device can arrive looking worse than the same nominal grade elsewhere.

Back Market is close behind, and its grade names — Fair, Good, Excellent, Premium — describe cosmetics only. Every grade is fully functional; you are paying for how it looks, not how it works. That single design decision removes most of the confusion buyers carry over from eBay.

eBay is the least smooth and the most powerful. Auctions, Best Offer, coupons and seller stores give you levers nowhere else has, but you carry the vetting work yourself. Swappa sits in between: the listing standard does the filtering for you, but you are messaging an individual, and there is no customer service department to escalate to the way there is on Amazon.

Dimension 4: Selection range

eBay's advantage here is structural, and it is not close. If you need a specific configuration — a particular RAM and storage combination, a discontinued lens mount, a console revision, a bundle with the original accessories — eBay is usually the only marketplace that has it, and often the only one that ever will. The refurbished platforms all work from a curated catalog, which is exactly why their quality is more predictable and their coverage is narrower.

Dimension 5: Best overall value

Value is the warranty-adjusted price, not the sticker.

Swappa's 3% buyer fee is real but small, and its prices are typically the lowest of the five because there is no refurbisher margin inside them. That is the trade: a working device from a stranger, with no coverage once it arrives. For something you plan to replace within a year, that is often the right trade. For a laptop you depend on, paying more for the two-year Allstate warranty on an eBay Certified Refurbished listing is the cheaper decision measured over the life of the machine.

Five more worth knowing about

Apple Certified Refurbished deserves a specific note, because it is the only channel that replaces parts as a matter of policy: refurbished iPhones, iPads and iPods ship with a new battery and a new outer shell, in new packaging, with a one-year limited warranty and a 14-day return window. That new-battery-and-shell promise covers Apple's iOS devices, not Macs — a refurbished MacBook gets the same one-year limited warranty as a new one, but not a guaranteed new enclosure.
